Major Airport Investment Set to Enhance Patagonia Access

Chile has announced a historic $162 million investment to expand and modernize the Presidente Carlos Ibáñez del Campo International Airport in Punta Arenas, the main gateway to Chilean Patagonia. The project is scheduled to begin in 2026 with a study phase, followed by construction starting in 2027. The expansion will nearly triple the terminal's capacity, increasing the facility's size from around 6,700 m² to over 16,000 m². It will also add five boarding bridges and significantly improve logistics, including the addition of a new cargo terminal and improved access infrastructure. These improvements are intended to support the growing demand for tourism in the region.

For travel advisors, this expansion signals improved connectivity and enhanced capacity for scheduled and charter flights into Patagonia, which is a key selling point for programs centered on Torres del Paine, fjord voyages, and Antarctic-linked itineraries. As these infrastructure upgrades align with growing demand from international markets, Chile's southernmost regions will become more accessible and appealing to experience-driven travelers in 2027 and beyond.
