This active hike of 12 km covers a large and scenic section of the Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park, the first park opened in Chile in 1926. As we advance, experiencing some ascents from the starting point, we will be surprised by stunning views of the volcanoes and the lakes that surround this section of the park. The landscape changes dramatically from temperate rainforest to volcanic steppe and then to the shores of the Andean lakes. The Andes range emerges on the horizon as we reach the emerald waters of Lake Todos Los Santos, where we end the hike and begin our journey back to town.
-
The Alerce Andino National Park is the first of the 17 that form the Route of the Parks of Patagonia. This protected area is located between mountains, volcanoes and the Pacific Ocean. This full day excursion will take us along the coast through the beginning of the Carretera Austral. We will hike for approximately 5 hours inside the park, surrounded by the exuberant temperate rainforest, including the old Alerce trees (Fitzroya cupressoides).
The transformation during millions of years of these mountains created a landscape full of rivers, waterfalls and lagoons. During the drive to the park we will make stops at local villages along the road and to admire the ocean view of the first fjord of Patagonia.
-
After one hour driving south-west from Puerto Varas, we will do a ferry crossing of 35 minutes to get to Chiloé, where we will have a comprehensive experience in the north part of the island, combining natural history and cultural heritage. We will be exploring this land of myths and unique biodiversity. You will visit a breeding colony of Humboldt and Magellanic penguins that arrive to Puñihuil every year during spring and summer time.
The penguins -and many other birds- live in protected islets in front of the beach, and can be seen closely from a boat that we will take for 30 minutes. After the navigation we will enjoy lunch at a local restaurant with stunning views over the Pacific Ocean.
-
Calbuco Volcano is part of a group of stratovolcanoes in the Lake District, and we are going to hike on its south face, inside the Llanquihue National Reserve. This very active cone had its last eruption in 2015, causing significant changes in the geomorphology and surrounding landscape. The trail will take us high enough to see the crater and dome, plus the spectacular views of the Reloncaví Estuary and Puerto Montt City.
We will cross some streams, admiring the ancient forest of Alerce redwood trees, waterfalls, and geological formations of lava trails that, after the last eruption, stand exposed for us to see and appreciate the constant changes in nature. This is a medium-difficulty trail of 14 kilometers, with a gentle ascent at the beginning until the volcano viewpoint. It becomes more demanding in the final portion, where it gets steeper and muddier, sometimes with snow in the spring, leading us to the refuge.

A classic circuit with the distinctive BirdsChile’s touch of natural history and intimate experience.
After breakfast we will drive one hour along the south shore of Lake Llanquihue to get into the National Park Vicente Pérez Rosales to the Petrohué river waterfalls and have a short interpretative walk through the temperate rainforest. After time for pictures enjoying the impressive view of the falls and the perfect conic shape of the Osorno volcano, we will drive back to reach the entrance of El Solitario trail. The 6 km path goes along the southwestern face of the volcano and it is very diverse, crossing different ecotones and geological formations, from the forest of the first part to the volcanic landscape of the second, interrupted by washouts that connect the river Petrohué to the volcano glacier.
