Temporary closure of Orongo Ceremonial Site in Easter Island
The Orongo Ceremonial Site, one of Easter Island’s most iconic archaeological locations, has been temporarily closed following a geological event near Rano Kau.
According to the Ma’u Henua Indigenous Community, which manages the island’s heritage sites, the closure comes after a mass movement along the coastal cliffs on November 4, 2025. The natural event, linked to coastal erosion and the island’s volcanic terrain, caused some rock detachment near the viewpoint area. Fortunately, no one was injured, and no archaeological structures were directly affected.
“The site will remain closed indefinitely while technical evaluations and safety measures continue to ensure the protection of our staff and visitors,”
explained Ariki Tepano Martin, President of the Ma’u Henua Indigenous Community.
Since the event, technical teams have been working on-site to assess the stability of the area and establish preventive measures. Safety remains the top priority for both visitors and the local community.
While Orongo remains closed, our local partners are preparing an alternative excursion that will visit other remarkable archaeological sites on Easter Island. This replacement tour will offer the same duration and rich cultural experience as the original Orongo visit.
We will share full details soon, but please note that your Emergency Team and on-site guides are already informed and coordinating accordingly.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we continue to support safe and responsible tourism on Rapa Nui.
